Limewire is one of the most used Bittorrent clients.
Posted on: October 07, 2009Lime wire is one of the most popular BitTorrent clients used to share large files across the peer to peer network especially media files like audio and video files. This application is written in Java programming language and runs on any computer that has Java Virtual Machine installed. Hence, it is platform independent and runs on Windows, MAC, Linux or any other OS that supports JVM.
Lime wire was launched in the year 2000. It has gained popularity among the P2P users mainly because of simple user interface and ease of use. In addition, it uses Gnutella network to locate and share files. There are two versions available- one is free and other paid version. The paid version has some enhanced features and no adware.
One of the attractive features of Lime wire is the protocol encryption using TLS. TLS (Transport Layer Security) refers to a cryptographic protocols that encrypts the connection and provides security for communications across the network. This facility obfuscates the connection so that the ISPs cannot monitor their clients visiting the Gnutella network (famous for illegal file sharing that includes copyrighted materials).The disadvantage is that even though it is very effective, it puts lot of load on the CPU and hence disabled by many users.
Lime wire sets ups packet forwarding rules with the UPnP routers and acts as UPnP Internet Gateway Device. UPnP refers to universal Plug and Play protocol that provides a simple way to connect devices and implement network easily at homes and office environments. An instant messenger is embedded into the software that allows the users to communicate with others. In addition, users can share files only with their biddies and not with everyone.
The majority of users who use lime wire are those who are interested in multimedia files like music and videos. An online store has been started which offers a single song for $0.99 and subscribers get songs at $0.27 per song. The service is limited to only certain countries.
Lime wire is not just P2P software but much more than it. It has FTP and HTTP support, Chat facility and a media player to play files even that are partially downloaded. Due to extreme pressure from RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the company incorporated frost wire code that blocks files that are copyrighted and illegal to share. It has most of the features present in other P2P applications.

Posted on: September 23, 2009BitComet is a powerful computer application that is used for transferring large files across the network. It is not just a BitTorrent client, but also a HTTP and FTP client. The term BitTorrent refers to a protocol for sharing large files across the network.
This application has been updated frequently and it is not just a P2P client, but a download manager that is multi threaded as well as it incorporates multiprotocol for file sharing. This feature makes it a very unique application, since a file can be downloaded by sharing parts of it from different P2P sources and Client-Server protocols.
Internet explorer browser is embedded inside the application to assist users to search torrent files without needing to open a web browser from outside. It supports all the features present in other BitTorrent clients like UPnP Gateway configuration, Scheduling, NAT traversal, Web seeding and protocol encryption etc.
Bitcomet has few innovative features. This application prioritizes the beginning and the ending portions of the media related files so that they can be previewed before they are fully downloaded. So, the user can stop the download if there is any problem with the file. In addition, a trackerless mode is available to track peers if tracker is offline. It supports plug-ins from Firefox and Internet explorer.
This application comes with an integrated flash player to play .flv and .swf files. This can also be downloaded individually and used without the main software application. A plug-in is available to connect to the vast eD2K network.
Bitcomet is written in C++ and currently supports only windows operating system. It is available in 52 different languages and is a freeware. It has a proprietary license and consists of adware.
Some of the important features of BitComet are
- Embedded search engine -google.atcomet.net
- Hash reporting
- It is loaded with adware
- Supports DHT
- Superseding
- Port mapping
- Protocol Encryption
- Scheduling
- File recovery
- Supports many features that are present in P2P clients and FTP clients
This software also supports FTP (file transfer protocol) and HTTP (Hypertext transfer protocol) for sharing large files.

BitTorrent The Oldest Peer to Peer Client
Posted on: September 18, 2009BitTorrent is a computer application that is used to transfer large files using peer to peer protocol. This is the first peer to peer client that was developed by Bram Cohen, who was the brain behind the peer to peer technology. Bram authored the P2P protocol, which made transferring of large files very simple affair. Scalability issues faced by traditional way of transferring files across the network were overcome by P2P technology. This application is also known as Mainline.
P2P protocol is nothing but a set of rules that enables you to connect with others in the peer to peer network. The advantage of this network is that you will be downloading and uploading at the same time. In addition, even a computer which is low on resources and bandwidth can participate without facing any problems. Therefore, this method is used to transfer very large files (like Linux OS) efficiently. Of course, it is faster and cheaper also.
BitTorrent client implements P2P protocols so that your computer connects with other computers in the network. This application is written in C++ and is available for Windows as well as MAC users. This is a global standard for transferring large files across the network. It is estimated that there are over 160 million clients worldwide and it is still growing.
The application started as an open source and until recently, it was converted into a closed source. The earlier versions of this software were written in python and were available with open source license.
BitTorrent software application allows the user to search for torrent files and download files. Torrents are small files that consist of all the details regarding the location and size of the files.
Some of the features of this client are
- Multiple parallel download;
- Graphical, Tubular and statistical views that allow users to clearly understand what is happening;
- Detailed information regarding the speed, the peers information and their bandwidth that is being used;
- Auto recovery system in case of a data crash;
- Supports ISP protocol encryption and all other features present in other P2P applications.

uTorrent Review and Analysis
Posted on: September 16, 2009uTorrent - The World's Tiniest BitTorrent Client
BitTorrent refers to a file sharing protocol that is used to transfer large amount of data online. This technology is also called peer-peer (a peer refers to a computer) file sharing protocol and it is estimated that 22%-55% of internet traffic is generated due to peer-to-peer file sharing. This is one of the efficient ways of transferring large amount of data irrespective of whether a computer participating in the transfer has good bandwidth or not. To implement this protocol a program is needed and this program is called BitTorrent client.
Once the connection is established with the help of the client, any type of file can be shared across the P2P network. uTorrent (pronounced as micro torrent) is one of the most famous BitTorrent clients. Unlike the other clients, this program is very tiny and occupies less than 1MB of disk space. Although it has all the features present in other clients, it is also equipped with features like protocol encryption, Tracker-less- support, RSS download-option, scheduler and quick resume etc. Another advantage is that, this application utilizes very little resources for execution, which makes it the most efficient client of all.
Another stunning feature of uTorrent is that web UI functionality has been built into it. Any application whether local or remotely controlled can communicate with this client using web API.A web API is nothing but an API (Application Program Interface) used to invoke the functions of the WEB UI.
uTorrent is written in C++ and this application is also called Utorrent. It is available for both windows and MAC operating systems and can run on systems having RAM less than 14 MB.
Most of the ISPs throttle and reduce the peer-to-peer traffic by reducing the internet speed. This application is built with protocol encryption facility that encrypts the BitTorrent traffic that makes it harder for the ISPs to identify.
This application also makes use of DHT (Distributed hash tables). Usually, a centralized tracker application is present that keeps track of the peers and facilitate connection between them. The requirements to maintain a centralized tracker is huge. To avoid this barrier, decentralized way of tracking is utilized and this is implemented using DHT. In this method, every peer acts as a tracker and it is commonly called tracker-less connection.
